Fifty Five years of Hospitality with The Ryan Family at The Ardilaun, Galway
Issued: 13th March 2017
The Ardilaun Hotel, Taylor’s Hill, Galway City first opened its doors to guests in 1962 on St. Patrick’s Day (17th March) – making it fifty-five years in the hospitality business for the Ryan family. Marking the occasion, John Ryan, manager and The Ardilaun team will host a special business networking event in association with Galway Chamber on Thursday 23rd March from 6.00-8.00pm in the hotel.
John will be joined by his mother Mrs. Breda Ryan who along with her husband Paddy opened the hotel in 1962. John now manages the business with his wife Maggie and a loyal team of over 150 employees. John and Maggie have four daughters who have worked part-time in the hotel – Eva, Sophie, Stephanie and Georgia.
From an 18 bedroom house hotel in 1962 to 123 rooms and deluxe suites as well as conference and banqueting function rooms currently, the hotel has seen many changes in lifestyle and technology over the years. Mrs. Breda Ryan is well-known for her impeccable taste in fashion, art and interiors. From the very beginning she took responsibility for the interior design and gardens at the hotel keeping the integrity of the ambiance of a house hotel through all the refurbishments. Before the hotel opened she drove to Wicklow to order bespoke ‘crown derby’ patterned delph from Arklow and down to Cork to source garden lanterns, she was involved in every step of the way to maintain the elegance and comfortable surroundings in the hotel. Stroll around the hotel’s landscaped gardens with mature trees and enjoy the beautiful marble fireplaces and original Waterford Crystal chandeliers in the Garden Lounge which were bought in Fallers of Galway.
If the walls could only speak and recount the tales of visits of celebrities like Kate Blanchett, Liam Neeson, Cillian Murphy as well as many political, rugby and sporting personalities who have stayed at The Ardilaun.
What is most remarkable is the wonderful welcome of a family run hotel, which is becoming more and more rare to find, following the downturn, fortunately The Ardilaun has survived several recessions and by all accounts has survived the most recent one.
Marking their 55th Anniversary in the hospitality business at The Ardilaun Hotel, Galway, the Ryan family are offering a special B&B rate of €55 per person per night on selected dates throughout 2017. The includes full use of The Ardilaun’s exclusive Leisure Club with Grecian style swimming pool, gym, sauna and jacuzzi, complimentary car parking and wifi. The hotel is also listed among the very few ‘dog friendly’ hotels in Ireland.
